The names of 123 unsuccessful Dail candidates have been referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions for failing to comply with the terms of the new Electoral Act regarding the financing of their campaigns.
The Public Offices Commission yesterday made public details of the political donations disclosed so far for last June's general election.
The 1997 Electoral Act, which came into force on May 15th, required the 317 unsuccessful Dail candidates to provide details of any donation exceeding £500 in value by August 1st. Similar declarations from elected TDs and Senators must be filed by January 31st. Political parties must file by March 31st. Presidential candidates must file their list before this Christmas.
The commission pointed out that 194 candidates made their returns on time. Late returns were received from 98 candidates and returns have not so far been received from 25 candidates.
"In accordance with the terms of the Act, the Commission is in contact with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to these 123 cases," according to a statement.
