It is understood gardaí in Shankill have set up an incident room and are checking CCTV footage as well as conducting house-to-house inquiries.

Local councillor Cormac Devlin of Fianna Fáil said this was the second serious incident in the Killiney area this year.

“I would ask the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the gardaí,” he said.

Mr Devlin said he had asked Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown council officials to review public lighting in the Killiney and Shankill area to ensure it is fit for purpose.

“I have also asked Garda management to step up patrols, particularly mountain bike patrols around Killiney Hill and the adjacent Dart stations,” he said.
