A garda on traffic duty was injured yesterday when he was struck by a car travelling in the wrong direction on a Dublin city centre street.

He was knocked to the ground, injuring his right shoulder and hand.

The garda had attempted to stop the car, which was travelling the wrong way on College Street at 8.25am after driving over construction cones. The incident occurred near roadworks next to Trinity College.

The driver failed to stop and struck the garda.

The driver then struck a Dublin Bus head-on before abandoning the car and fleeing the scene on foot in the direction of Pearse Street.

According to witnesses, the car was a brown BMW estate.

Gardaí have launched an investigation to find the driver, who is still at large. It is believed that the car involved had been stolen.

A spokeswoman for Dublin Bus said the car hit a route 16 bus travelling southbound on College Street. The front of the bus sustained minor damage, and passengers had to be transferred to another bus. No injuries have been reported.

According to a garda spokeswoman, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
