Prominent republican Pearse McCauley has been further remanded to Castlerea prison on charges of assaulting his wife.
Mr McCauley (50) was further remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison following previous appearances at Harristown District Court and his initial court appearance in Cavan on St Stephen's Day.
He is facing four charges, including threatening to kill or cause serious harm to his wife, Pauline Tully McCauley at Keelderry, Kilnaleck, Co Cavan, on Christmas Eve.
He is also charged with assaulting Ms Tully McCauley causing her harm on the same occasion.
In addition, he is charged with threatening to kill or cause serious harm to Ms Tully McCauley’s brother, Thomas Tully and with threatening to kill or cause serious harm to a neighbour, Seamus Leddy. These offences are also alleged to have been committed on December 24th.
Dressed in a black jacket, Mr McCauley, from Canal Bank Walk, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan, made a short remand appearance before Judge Geoffrey Browne at Harristown District Court.
A new legal aid application was made by defence solicitor, Alan Gannon, following the transfer of the case to his firm. Mr Gannon told the court the accused was not in a position to make an application for bail, but hoped to do so at next week’s remand hearing.
Supt Aidan Foley applied to Judge Browne to have him remanded in continuing custody to appear again at Harristown District Court on January 23rd.
