FORMER PRESIDENT and UN High Commissioner Mary Robinson is to receive a knighthood for her service to the cause of human rights.

Mrs Robinson will be invested today as a Dame of the Irish Grand Priory of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus.

The organisation is an ecumenical Christian order of knighthood.Originally founded in the 4th century, it was brought to Ireland by Randall Plunkett, the 19th Lord Dunsany, in the early 1960s.

Mrs Robinson will receive the honour of Dame Grand Cross of Merit for her “many years of distinguished public service to the cause of human rights across the world”.

The order is better known for its charity work. The investiture will be performed by the order’s 49th grandmaster Don Carlos Gereda de Borbon, Marquis de Almazan, a cousin of Spanish king Juan Carlos, at a special ceremony in Dublin today.
