The ESB has issued a warning to building contractors to check for underground electricity cables before commencing work after third-party digging resulted in a power outage in some parts of Dublin this morning.
Several thousand electricity customers lost power in the Ranelagh/Milltown areas in the south of the city after a power cable was damaged during building work.
Although there were no injuries in the incident, the electricity supplier warned of the dangers posed by electricity cables, particularly in areas where building work is taking place.
The accident happened at around 9.45am and around 6,000 customers were affected before power was restored by emergency crews after about an hour.
