Two men were killed yesterday when they drowned in their truck after it crashed off the road and ended up in a roadside stream. The truck collided with a car at Grangemockler, Co Tipperary, 20 miles from Kilkenny on the Clonmel road, and landed cab-first in the water, submerging the two passengers.
The trailer of the truck became separated and remained on the road after the cab crashed through a low wall on the roadside and turned over into the water. Rescue services were called to the scene, and a digger was required to lift the submerged cab. The bodies had to be cut from the badly-damaged truck and were brought to St Joseph's Hospital in Clonmel.
Both vehicles, a Hino truck and a Volvo car, were reported to be from the area, although last night gardai were waiting for formal identification of the two men.
A driver and his two sons and a woman with two children were in the car. They were taken to Waterford Regional Hospital, but only the driver, who had to be cut from the vehicle, was reported to be serious. The other passengers were detained in hospital overnight.
