• Eleanor Fitzsimons got in touch about flying to Biarritz, in southern France, where the airport is too small, she says, to offer shops or even a cafe

"When flying from Dublin to Biarritz with Ryanair or Air France, you will benefit from the fact that this tiny regional airport, known officially as Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne, is relatively quiet and hassle-free to get through.

"As well as being close to the centre of town, the airport has enough taxis and buses to mean you can be sitting on your balcony, enjoying a glass of wine, within an hour of your aircraft touching down.

"It is worth noting, however, the airport's lack of facilities on the return leg. We are all keen these days to check in in good time, and to get the tedious business of going through security and passport control out of the way as soon as possible, but at Biarritz there is nothing to occupy you once you have passed through these areas.

"No shopping and not even the possibility of a cup of coffee. Passengers are simply herded into two holding areas to await their flights.

"Our discomfort was compounded by the fact that, as Ryanair passengers, we could not secure designated seats before boarding, meaning we had to queue to ensure we were seated with family and friends.

"The result of all this inconvenience was that stressed travellers jostled for places in a tight space while bored children ran amok, tripping over hand baggage and adding to the unpleasantness.

"Our inbound flight was delayed by about half an hour, and, although to their credit the crew turned the aircraft around as quickly as possible, the lack of any information about the delay raised tension levels to the maximum.

"My advice is eat and shop before you set out for the airport, don't be too hasty passing through security and passport control, bring a good book and something to keep the children amused - and hold your nerve.

"Certainly don't let it put you off travelling to this wonderful Basque seaside resort."
