Mary Raftery investigative journalism bursary established

Successfull applicant will have three-month traineeship at ‘The Irish Times’

A bursary and traineeship in investigative journalism has been set up by the Mary Raftery Journalism Fund in collaboration with The Irish Times.

The successful applicant will undertake a three-month traineeship with The Irish Times, starting this September.

During this time, the successful applicant will receive training in investigative journalism as part of a team, as well as producing three original pieces of work to be published by The Irish Times.

Speaking before the launch, David Waddell, chair of the fund (pictured above left), said: “We live in an age where ethical, professional journalism competes with hearsay and inaccurate reportage.

“To ensure accountability and to allow citizens secure a full picture, investigative journalism needs to continue to have a fundamental place in society.”

Kevin O'Sullivan, editor of The Irish Times (above right), recalled Mary Raftery's "flair for thorough investigation".

He said: "We hope to help foster that ability in the successful applicant. The Irish Times is delighted to support this important project."

The bursary and traineeship is open to students and graduates of all disciplines. The deadline for submission of applications is 5pm on Monday, May 16th. Further details at maryrafteryfund.ie/
