“The First 100” is the first in a series of exhibitions featuring photographic portraits by the late Máire Uí Mhaicín in the axis art centre, Ballymun, Dublin. Uniquely, the photos are of Irish-language writers and authors whose work explores Ireland’s cultural heritage in prose, poetry, dramas, essays, biographies, literary criticism, folklore, children’s literature and other forms.
Speaking of her late mother’s work, exhibition curator Áine Macken said that the “project combined her incredibly charming character with her adoration of literature and the Irish language, and is an expression of her other greatest love, photography. Her portraits are unique and important, not only because of who they portray and the great work these writers produced, but also because of the energy and talent she herself infused into these sittings.”
The work will be on display between Thursday 18th September and Friday 24th October 2014. In addition, a closing event in the form of a public interview with three of the featured writers will take place on the 24th of October at 8pm, hosted by TG4’s Tristan Rosenstock.
