Two members? One drummer and one singer/guitarist? It’ll never work, surely? Well, for every White Stripes there’s a Black Keys, and if it works for Jack and Meg then as sure as beans is beans it works for Dan Auerbach and Pat Carney.

These days blues-rock has a different connotation than it had back when Stevie Ray Vaughan ruled the roost. The Black Keys utilise the garage-rock aesthetic and 8-track recording method, which has little time for frills or overdubs.

Not that Auerbach and Carney don’t like to mix it. In their 10-year career they have collaborated with artists as diverse as Dangermouse and Raekwon (the latter on 2009’s Blakroc, a hip-hop/blues-rock hybrid album), while their songs have been covered by the likes of Kelly Clarkson.
