The Visiting Artists programme is one of the jewels in the crown of Dublin’s Graphic Studio, as two current exhibitions demonstrate. One, at the Graphic Studio Gallery, features the latest crop of visiting artists – a great line-up including Diana Copperwhite (above), Michael Cullen, Martin Gale, Richard Gorman and Hughie O’Donoghue. The other, at Imma, is a retrospective surveying some 30 years of the scheme.
Visiting Arts was pioneered by Mary Farl Powers in 1980. The idea is that artists come to the studio and work with
a master printer. The advantage is that artists whose main medium may not be print can draw on the expertise of someone experienced in the techniques, and the end results are often impressive. They are also, comparatively speaking, good value. A limited-edition print is an artwork, and many artists, meeting the challenge of another discipline, have produced exceptional pieces under the auspices of the scheme.
