A couple of years ago we took a shine to this determinedly retro Canadian outfit's Lost & Undone: A Gospel Bluegrass Companion.

So much for heaven and hell: this companion set concentrates on “cheating and hurting”, with a selection of 13 well-chosen songs, some better known than others, that convey the many shades of heart-struck pain.

The gang evince their loyalty to tradition in the ensemble singing and classic instrumental line-up (guitar, double bass, fiddle and mandolin). Unlike much current bluegrass, where the playing is king, here the song reigns.

Their version of Bill Monroe's One I Love Is Gone is perfectly pitched, as is the ensemble singing generally (eg Red Wicked Wine).

The solo vocals on tracks such as Silver Dagger lack authority, but the affection for the music never falters.
