In the early 15th century, the Council of Constance ended the crisis in the Roman Catholic Church, which had seen three individuals claiming to be the true pope. Katharina Bäuml and her Capella de la Torre have delved into the writings and iconography of the council. They’ve reconstructed the styles and flavours of instrumental music that was heard from the shawms, slide trumpets and sackbuts of the bands of the French, Italian, English and German contingents in those church-changing years. Given that much of the original music was actually improvised, you might regard the idea of reconstruction as quixotic. But if you like the distinctive, full-on tone of the early instruments and dances with foot-tapping percussion, don’t hesitate. challenge.nl
