Romanian pianist Luiza Borac's latest CD is a disc about transformations. There are eight of Liszt's Schubert song transcriptions, re-creations that helped make the works known long before most singers had taken them up, and before the song recital as we know it had come into existence. Most remarkable, however, are five songs sung by Romanian tenor Ion Buzea at the age of 30 in 1964, with Borac grafting her own playing on in the introductions or postludes. Well, if Frank Patterson could duet with John McCormack, why not? Also featured are Rachmaninov's transcriptions of his violinist friend Fritz Kreisler's Liebesleid and Liebesfreud, the Chants nostalgiques by Constantin Silvestri (still better known as a conductor), and Godowsky's Alt-Wien. It all adds up to more than the sum of its parts. url.ie/e8oo
