Explosions In The Sky

The main problem with post- rock all-instrumental bands is that, if they get it wrong, they can become imprisoned inside a vocal-free jail, where the quiet/ loud blueprint gets as much exercise as it needs. But when they get it right, the music can reach the celestial highs of the likes of Sigur Rós and Mogwai. From Texas, Explosions in the Sky return (after 2007's All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone) with a six-track album that invites comparisons but ultimately stops at allowing them through the door. Be Comfortable, Creature, is a real slow-burner, the kind of mind- massaging serenity that Mercury Rev and Brian Eno excel at, but which Explosions in the Sky invest with their own acute melodic sensibilities. The other five tracks offer equal levels of pleasure, although some ( Last Known Surroundings, Let Me Back In) are louder than bombs. Fab. See explosionsinthesky.com
