You know Swedish/ Argentinean José González through his often beguiling singer-songwriter work, but do you know Junip, the Gothenburg-based rock band that González occasionally drifts into and out of, and which he revived especially for the recording of their most recent album, Fields?

In collaboration with drummer Elias Araya and keyboard player Tobias Winterkorn, González creates a rather more robust sound, threaded with primary instruments that result in music that is as close to insistent Krautrock as it is to intimate and affecting singer-songwriter material.

We wouldn’t bet on this outfit lasting the distance for a follow-up album any time soon, so our advice is to get down to Whelan’s tonight to see not so much a one-off, but a blink-and-miss-’em.
