It's not just news journalists who face a silly season, you know: the games industry gets a little barren too, living for the killer announcements in events such as Gamescom and E3. So it's a good time for developers to release rejigged versions of old games. Enter Spelunker HD.

Many moons ago Spelunkerwas a 2D, eight-bit platform game that pitted miners against ghosts.

Spelunkercirca 1983 was a fun diversion, but now the gameplay is agonisingly unforgiving: step down from a ladder the wrong way, for example, and that's a life lost.

We're grateful for games like Spelunkerfor influencing recent gems such as Super Meat Boyand Raskulls. But Spelunker HDisn't updated enough. Once a platform master, it has been long surpassed by numerous students.
