The Doors have long since held their own in rock's Hall of Fame, and this latest addition (four performances across six discs) to the band's archival concert series won't do their legacy any harm. Recorded in New York City's Felt Forum, in January 1970 (just prior to the release of their fifth album, Morrison Hotel, which set them back on course following the disappointment of the previous one, The Soft Parade), the concerts have an urgency, due possibly to the more intimate surroundings.

With better acoustics and more audience interaction than usual, the gigs also threw The Doors a lifeline: it’s easier to dismiss rock star poses and pretentions that usually afflict bands playing arena size venues. Here Morrison & co are seen getting back to basics. Extras? With six remixed and remastered discs, you want extras? That’s plain greedy.
