Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is donating $100 million (€89 million) to the Obama Foundation in honour of Congressman John Lewis, a hero of the US civil rights movement of the 1960s who died last year, the foundation said on Monday.

As part of the gift, Bezos has asked that the plaza at the Obama Presidential Center be named the John Lewis Plaza, the foundation said in a statement.

“Freedom fighters deserve a special place in the pantheon of heroes, and I can’t think of a more fitting person to honour with this gift than John Lewis,” Bezos said in the statement.
