Rob Yeung is a British psychologist, business speaker, and management author and has authored over 20 books including the bestseller, Confidence. This book is laid out in five chapters starting with developing a winning outlook and moving on to win an argument, a pitch, a job and 'the race'.
In the mind-set chapter Yeung distinguishes between those with a ‘gift’ mentality who believe their personality and make-up is largely fixed and those who believe their traits are much more malleable and amenable to change. Many studies have demonstrated that these growth-mind-set types perform stronger in all sorts of different domains t those with gift mind-sets.
The chapter on winning arguments looks in depth at the different personality styles and distinguishes different degrees of assertiveness and passiveness. It suggests a method for choosing the right words in an argument under the DEAR acronym. This suggests that you Describe the facts of the situation as objectively as you can, that you Express your opinions and feelings, that you Acknowledge the other person’s opinion or position and that you Recommend a solution.
