We have two red wines from SuperValu this week, both selling for €10 for the next few days. Most of us see Chile as a source of inexpensive varietal wines, sauvignon blanc in particular. Yet the southern parts of Chile have vineyards planted many years ago, with lesser-known grape varieties, some of which produce excellent wine.
The self-proclaimed mystique/mystery in these two wines comes in the grape varieties; Mystery II is made from carignan, a variety found in Spain and the south of France. Mystery I is a blend of carignan, cinsault and país. Cinsault is also widely grown in the south of France, and país is a historic variety, brought to South America by the first Spanish settlers. Once widely grown in Argentina, Chile, and California, it is has seen a revival of interest recently.

Aresti Mystique Mystery II 2022 Maule Valley, Chile
14%, €14.99 (down to €10 until 13th)
This is medium-to full-bodied with firm dark fruits, a touch of leather and spice with a dry finish. Drink this with roast or grilled red meats, a steak would do nicely.

Aresti Mystique Mystery I, 2023
14%, €14.99 (down to €10 until 13th)
This is a very attractive wine with plenty of supple juicy red fruits – red cherries and strawberries – and an easy finish. Try it with chicken or pork dishes.
