Lidl recently launched a series of new wines for autumn. All are available in limited quantities. Both of today’s wines fall into that category. In recent years, Lidl has offered a range of Portuguese wines, some of them very good. The João Pires below comes from a wine region just south of Lisbon. It is made using the Muscat of Alexandria grape (known locally as Moscatel Graudo) which is frequently made into a fortified dessert wine in Setúbal.
Dão is a wine region in the north of Portugal. Here the cool climate and granite soils can produce very high quality medium-bodied white and red wines. The Torre de Ferro is made from a blend of local grape varieties, mainly Touriga Nacional.
