Civil liberties and Covid prevention

Sir, – I assume that of those who proclaim that there is a civil liberties basis for opposing measures such as mask wearing in crowded settings (like school classrooms) only a very small minority are deluded “Q Anon types”. But there must be some alternative explanation for the others.

I suspect that, for many, it is explained by their underestimation of the validity of the scientific evidence that Covid is highly transmissible and once contacted, it is dangerous and often fatal.

As evidence supporting my theory, could I ask how likely it is that any intelligent commentator would find themselves, mutatis mutandis, saying “I assert the right of my child to go to school during an outbreak of cholera/measles/mumps without having to wear an anti-virus mask“? – Yours, etc,

MIKE JENNINGS,
