Reduce, reuse and recycle

Sir, – As a citizen, and particularly a parent, I am fed up being told that it is my responsibility to fix problems created largely by others. Supermarkets and food suppliers profit by selling healthy foods covered in unrecyclable packaging and unhealthy food which is directly contributing to the obesity crisis. Yet it is the rest of us who are being told to change our habits.

Waistlines will not go down and rubbish levels will not reduce until these issues are addressed at source. There should be a ban on non-recyclable packaging and clear warning labels on foods which are dangerously high in salt, sugar etc.

In the meantime, my quantity of rubbish will not really reduce regardless of pricing changes. I will continue to feed my children fruit and vegetables sold in unnecessary foam packaging. Do I have a choice really when most fresh items are only sold that way? – Yours, etc,
