Nphet’s record

Sir, – With regard to the analysis of Nphet's work (News, –Analysis, February, Saturday 19th), Ireland does not have the second lowest rate of deaths per million in Europe; in fact, not only the Netherlands, as stated in the analysis, but Iceland, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Malta and Cyprus have lower Covid deaths per million than Ireland, and lower by far.

This can be confirmed on the same source referred to in the analysis, that of Our World in Data, as well as on other statistical sources, like Statista.

We may have done better than our nearest neighbours, but there are European countries that did far better, despite not having the same vaccine uptake nor the level of Covid-19 restrictions that were insisted on by Nphet. – Yours, etc,

SONJA
