Sir, – While checking out of a major supermarket with a few groceries, including a packet of cream crackers, I asked to buy a paper bag in which to carry my groceries home. I was told by the pleasant checkout assistant that I could buy only a plastic bag, not a paper one. Paper bags were only available to those who bought clothing in the store, she said, and were free of charge. It was store policy.
When I then offered to wear the cream crackers home rather than carry them, if she would sell me a paper bag, she thought I was indeed crackers and refused me with a laugh.
It’s not easy being ecologically aware nowadays. – Yours, etc,
PAVEL MARIANSKI,
