Bangers for life?

Sir, – Conor Kennedy makes a plea for cars for life (Letters, March 22nd).

Looking back on cars I have known, I remember the one that had to be parked at night facing east to ensure that it would start in the morning. The one that belched a cloud of black fumes when going up a hill. The one with a hole on either side of the transmission in the back so that one had to vault over them onto the back seat. The Renault 4 which needed a few vigorous turns of the starting handle to get her going. And the story about the man selling a car who was asked by the prospective buyer, “Does she burn oil?”

“She would, if she got it”, was the reply. – Yours, etc,
