Two men have appeared in court in connection with a series of robberies in Cork including one where a woman suffered a fractured skull after she was attacked by a man armed with a machete.

Brian Veale (30) an address at Dominic Street near Shandon in Cork city was brought before a special sitting of Cork District Court on Saturday and charged with two separate robbery offences.

Mr Veale, who is originally from Dungarvan, Co Waterford, was charged with the robbery of a 19-year-old American student at Dominic Street in Cork on February 26th.

He was also charged with a second offence of the attempted robbery of a 20-year-old Irish man also on Dominic Street on the same night.

A second man, Dean O'Driscoll (24), also with an address at Dominic Street in Cork, was charged with the robbery of a woman in her 20s on Gerald Griffin Street in Cork on February 22nd.

Gardaí objected to bail in both cases and Judge Olann Kelleher remanded both accused in custody to appear again at Cork District Court on March 5th.
