Gardai will be out in force early on Friday morning to crack down on speeding on Irish roads.

National “Slow Down Day” is being conducted to raise awareness around speeding and will include significant enforcement.

As part of the initiative gardai have released a list of some of the locations at which they will be based for a 24 hour period lasting until 7am on Saturday.

“The aim of slow down day is to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding, increase compliance with speed limits and act as a deterrent to driving at excessive or inappropriate speed,” gardai said in a statement ahead of the operation.

There was an increase in road death rates last year with the total reaching 187.

“Although there have been fewer road deaths this year compared to the same period in 2016, we can never be complacent,” gardai said.

“Excessive speed was a contributory factor in one third of all fatal collisions during this time. The higher the speed, the greater the likelihood is of a collision happening and the more severe the outcome of that collision.”

Last Friday, gardai monitored 98,486 vehicles of which 241, or 0.2 per cent, were found to be breaking the speed limit.
