A 20 year old man stabbed to death in north inner city Dublin last night has been named locally as Glen Osborne.

The man, from Taafe Place Ballybough died shortly after he was stabbed once in the upper body outside Ballybough House just before 10pm. A 16-year-old boy, who is understood to be from the same area, has been arrested and is in Garda custody.

Gardaí believe the stabbing a occurred following a confrontation involving several youths in a carpark outside the flats complex.

Mr Osborne and his partner were expecting their first child in a few months. He worked in a retail outlet in the city centre.

Paramedics attempted to revive him at the scene of the stabbing before bringing him to the Mater Hospital where he died a short time later. The 16-year-old boy was arrested in the early hours of this morning and remains in garda custody in Mountjoy Garda Station where he can be questioned for up to 24 hours.

Gardaí have launched a murder enquiry and have established an incident room at the station.

Searches and door to door inquiries were ongoing in the area today and some evidence has been recovered.

The scene of the fatal stabbing is overlooked by many flats and gardaí are eager to speak to any occupants with relevant information.

The scene has been preserved for technical and forensic examination.

The office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post mortem is to take place shortly.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
